WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

What is depression?

Depression is a brain disease just like heart disease. Early intervention is the key if not diagnosed and treated early anxiety, worry, and stress could become severe depression.

Who is at Risk?

  • Being very anxious with other people and having a hard time talking to them, even when there is a desire to do so.
  • Being very afraid that other people will be judgmental. .
  • Worrying for days or weeks before an event where other people will be present.
  • Having a hard time making and keeping friends.

Uncoupoling of Mirror Neurons

Mirror neurons help us recognize the thoughts and intentions of others. This, in turn, helps us connect with people.

For example, if you see someone smile, your mirror neurons are activated. Your mirror neurons then send a signal to the muscle involved with smiling back. For those suffering with depression, the uncoupling of mirror neurons might happen. This might prevent them from understanding the feelings and good intentions of others.

Inner Conflict

Imagine someone suffering from constant anxiety and stress. Imagine that he or she cannot understand the intentions of others and, therefore, feeling unloved. At this point, this person is quite vulnerable and already feels worthless.

The inner critic, seizes this opportunity to constantly badger the depressed person with accusations of worthlessness. The inner critic successfully blocks the person’s intelligence, self-confidence and creativity.

Our son Dominic suffered from doubts about being able to finish his PhD, and these doubts grew over time. Unfortunately, his inner critic won out in the end.

  • Depression is a biochemical disorder with a genetic component.
  • It is as real a biological disorder as is juvenile diabetes.
  • Those who are depressed suffer from an inability to feel pleasure.
  • Their grief and guilt are so severe that depressed people can become delusional.
  • Psycho-motor retardation can set in, making it exhausting for depressed persons to do things. They can fall into a paralyzed state.
